           Northrop Grumman Corporate Director Mark Root shares his journey with George Mason University students. He talks about the opportunities in public relations. As he mentioned, it was helpful for him to make the switch from journalism to public relations.

“Public relations experts write for their readers. They want facts for the most parts and they want to provide service to their readers,” Root said.

As Corporate Director of Media Relations at Northrop Grumman Corporation, it is his responsibility to share information about the company and use social media to help it grow.

“The social media brought many positive changes to our company, but we generally do not respond to media via social media. However, we do get questions from social media,” Root said.

Northrop Grumman’s mission is to be at the forefront of the technology and innovation by delivering superior capability. Northrop Grumman has many competitors, however Root expresses, “We want to have friendly relationships with our competitors.”

As Root mentioned, social media helps their company make several business connections with many countries. On the other hand they need to expand their connections and need translators to help to build up that relationship with even more countries.

“When we make announcements, in Australia, Japan, Saudi, we have to translate, the cultures of those companies are also unique. We have personnel in Australia and in Middle East countries. They are helpful and we rely on them,” Root said.

Root added that an event would be held on October 28 at the George Mason University. He stressed how important it is for students to attend. This event will help students build up business relationship with companies. Northrop Grumman will be among the companies represented.

“There are a lot of folks like myself. You can make contact with professionals; tell your friends and relatives about it too. You don’t have to stay for the entire event, it is a good opportunity for all of you,” Root said.
